PD1000A Hardware Overview

The PD1000A Power Device Measurement System for Advanced Modeling consists of several hardware subsystems, all controlled by the PD1000A System Control Software:

  • IV/CV Curve Tracer System (B1506A or B1505A with optional InTEST thermal platform controller and hot plate)
    • The curve tracer system provides IV and CV measurements. They “teach” the model how the device reacts under specific current and voltage conditions.

  • S-Parameter Measurement System (E5080A, B2902A/B, and Optional -SPK Accessory Kit with cables, test fixtures, Bias Ts, etc.)
    • The S-parameter measurement system measures the frequency response of the device under zero-bias and biased conditions. This "teaches" the model how the device reacts in the frequency domain.

  • Keysight’s PD1500A Double-Pulse Test (DPT) System uses a common test circuit for characterizing power transistors. In general, it enables the analysis of turn-on and turn-off characteristics for supply voltages up to 1200 VDC and currents to 200 A.
    • The DPT system measures farther out in the I-V curve than standard IV/CV device characterization (such as the PD1000A tests with the Keysight B1505A or B1506A). For Wide Band Gap (WBG) devices, this means behavior at higher voltage and current operating points can be accurately characterized. It can also be used as a verification tool for the simulation results by showing the actual switching curves.

The following diagram shows the PD1000A hardware components for the IV/CV and S-Parameter Tests. Your system may not have all these components. For example, if you do not require IV measurements over a range of temperatures, you may not have the InTEST thermal platform controller and its hot plate.
